Meadow Valley Wash Petroglyphs in Nevada

Meadow Valley Wash - North

Petroglyph Sites 1 and 2

In our Meadow Valley Wash - North series, petroglyph sites 1 and 2 are located just outside of the main canyon and the remaining sites in the series are located within the canyon itself.

A little Information - which may or may not be accurate

The little bit of information that I have been able to glean regarding this area and the original inhabitants in the canyon has been contradictory.  One report states that the canyon had been occupied on and off for over a 1000 years, first by the Fremont, then by the Southern Paiute.  Another report states that the Shoshone first occupied the canyon.  I also found conflicting reports regarding dates and names of railroads.  At any rate, in the 1860's it was the white Mormon settlers who moved into the canyon and the surrounding valleys to mine the local ores.  In 1890 the Union Pacific Railroad graded a road through the canyon and some time after that, a narrow-gauge railroad was built through the canyon to haul ore from the adjacent valleys.  An ore mill was built in the canyon and was subsequently destroyed by fire in 1895.  The foundation of the mill and part of one of the lime kilns can still be seen.  Also in the canyon the settlers created "ice ponds".  Large blocks of ice were cut from these ponds and stored in sawdust-lined icehouses for use later on in the year.  I did find and photograph what may be the remnants of either one of the ponds or a storage unit.

The bottom line to the "not-so-accurate" information above is, the tracks and ties are gone but most of the road bed is still there.  The bridges were destroyed by vandals seeking a good time, but parts of the mill foundation and most of one of the lime kilns is still there along with some very nice scenery.  If you are interested in the particular canyon, email me for details.
